XebiaLabs Support -

From the 6.1 releases of XL Deploy and XL Release onward, XebiaLabs will be switching to a short-term support/long-term support model for its product releases.

That means you'll get to choose between two kinds of releases for our software:

  • The long-term support (LTS) versions that will be supported for a year after they've been superseded by the next major LTS release. These are the releases you are used to getting from XebiaLabs, with a major new version coming out every 6 months and maintenance releases to address bug fixes in between.
  • The short-term support (STS) versions that will be supported until they are superseded by the next LTS or STS release and that will not receive specific maintenance releases. These are new to XebiaLabs and give you access to new features more quickly.

To give you an example of how this works, let's consider the current XL Deploy 6.0.0 release of November 2016. That is a long-term support (LTS) release. It will be supported and maintained until a year after the next LTS version comes out, which is scheduled to be XL Deploy 7.0.0 in May 2017. From November 2016 until May 2018, support questions about XL Deploy 6.0.0 (and its maintenance releases) will be answered. If necessary, hotfixes will be provided. And as required, a maintenance releases will be created, i.e. XL Deploy 6.0.1, followed by XL Deploy 6.0.2, etc.

Between those 6.0.0 and 7.0.0 releases, XL Deploy 6.1.0 will be released in January 2017. This is a short-term support (STS) version. It will be supported until the next STS or LTS version comes out, which might be a 6.2.0 release in March 2017 or the 7.0.0 release in May 2017. So, from January to March 2017, support questions about about XL Deploy 6.1.0 will be answered. If necessary, hotfixes will be provided. But no specific maintenance release will be created. Instead, the next STS (or LTS) release will include bugfixes, as well as additional features.

The following table summarizes the difference between STS and LTS releases:

Short-term support Long-term support (major release) Long-term support (maintenance release)
Supported for Until the next STS or LTS release Until a year after it has been superseded by the next LTS major release Until a year after its corresponding LTS major release has been superseded
Supported
Release frequency Once every 2 months Once every 6 months As required, usually once every 2 months
Maintenance releases created
Hotfixes provided
Choose this if... You want the latest features as soon as possible, and you are prepared to upgrade to the next STS release to get more new features, improvements, and bug fixes You want a stable set of features and you want maintenance releases that only contain bug fixes You want bug fixes for your latest LTS release
